The central medallion was an original design which I screen printed onto the central fabric. Whole cloth style quilting gives the illusion of variations in the color of the fabric background.

this piece features a branch from a cherry tree in spring, covered in blossoms. I love the unexpectedness of the brown and the dimensionality provided by the cherry blossoms stitched on top and the bobbin quilting. The title comes because the central blue panel was a leftover scrap of fabric designed by my mom for one of her quilts, this piece thus became its little sister.

I grew up in the mountains of Ruidoso, NM, and winter has always been my favorite time of year. In this original design based on my parent's orchard I wanted to evoke the cold, crisp, still feeling of a winter morning as yet undisturbed by the activities of life.

I grew up in Ruidoso, NM, where the rhythm of the winter was always governed by our overseeing mountain Sierra Blanca. With the snow comes refreshment and winter visitors to fuel the small-town economy, but more importantly the fun of sledding and snowplay with friends and the incredible natural high of downhill skiing.

All proteins adopt a precise 3-dimensional structure depending on their composition, function, and location inside (or outside) of our cells. Subtle changes in this protein structure, a process known as conformational change, lead to the cellular signaling processes that underlie almost all of our bodily functions. Conformational change occurs in response to stimuli of many types including the binding of other proteins, the covalent addition of chemical side chains, mechanical signals, and chemical signals. The scientific advancements that have enabled us to measure these tiny changes are amazing and have enabled a much clearer understanding of both basic biology and disease pathologies. This piece depicts the retinal protein rhodopsin in its unactivated conformation on the left and its activated conformation on the right. Conformational change in rhodopsin is initiated by light, allowing binding of downstream proteins and initiation of the signal transduction cascade which leads to vision.
